Homemade Garlic Bread Recipe - Using Sourdough! (1)

Homemade garlic toast using sourdough bread isn’t exactly mind-blowing, but…

what if YOU don’t know how good it is?

I have to remember here on The Kitchen Magpie that I have all sorts of cooks at different levels, from beginners and beyond. I wasn’t going to post this recipe and then remembered that a lot of University students here in Edmonton use this website for cooking (I gathered my intel from working with University students a while back that told me my recipes were circulated far and wide on campus. And that was BEFORE we got into co*cktails! Now? Sheesh. I can only imagine!)

Basic cooking skills are GOOD to post. Basic recipes that interest people are GOOD to post. Not everyone has been cooking for years. And you know what?

Even I didn’t think of slicing up sourdough bread and using it as a last resort for homemade garlic breaduntil last weekend.

And therein lies the reasoning for posting everything I learn here on The Kitchen Magpie. I’ve written a cookbook, have #2 in the works, and still….this really never entered my mind.

Sure, things LEAVE my mind at about 5 items per second, but enter my mind? I jump on those and keep them while I can!

Everyone needs a delicious homemade garlic toast recipe and let me tell you, using sourdough will bring your homemade garlic toast to another level.

It’s chewy. It’s tangy. Yes, as my picky brother mentioned when he ate it, it’s NOT soft and fluffy like regular white bread, but that’s why we loved it so much. You can use the garlic butter spread on a baguette as is traditional, but if you are looking for a serious taste sensation, sourdough is the way to go.

The real key here is to SLICE the bread and place it on the baking sheets, with both sides buttered. I admit it, I love those pre-made garlic breads that are sliced and in the frozen section of the grocery store. Ugh. There is just no helping me some days! So I decided that I needed to make my own butter drenched homemade garlic toast.

I will never buy store-bought again, after trying this sourdough version. YUM!

How to use sourdough bread to make amazing garlic bread!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup salted butter really softened
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 loaf sourdough bread sliced into 8-10 slices ( or a baguette)
  • 2 tbsp minced parsley optional, just gives it nice colour

Instructions

  • Pre-heat your oven to 350 °F.

  • Combine the butter, garlic and parsley in a bowl.

  • Spread over BOTH SIDES of the sourdough bread, then place on a baking sheet.

  • Bake for 5-7 minutes, then turn on the broiler. Broil for another 3-4 minutes, depending on how crispy you want the bread!

  • Remove and serve!

    Fantastic! I microwaved the butter and made it mostly a liquid, then added the garlic and parsley. I added more garlic than original was called for though. I brushed the mixture on the bread! It turned out stupendously good!Homemade Garlic Bread Recipe - Using Sourdough! (13)

    My daughter made this to go with her broccoli cheddar soup. I never would have thought to try garlic bread using sourdough bread, but that little twist is what helped to made the whole meal SO DELICIOUS!!! So now, that’s what we eat our broccoli cheddar soup with every time!!!

    Agreed. My perfect sourdough is dipped in buttery clams. Alas, I now live in Nebraska. No clams. But I still love sourdough! I tried a basted (olive oil/garlic) toasted slice flip and added mozzarella/parm. Frankly didn’t work for me. I love this bread so much more than others that I have to find a way to get my land locked spouse to see the ‘light’.
